Albinism is very little known in Senegal, a lot of ignorance and false beliefs result in discrimination against people with albinism. They are marginalized and very often remain isolated, and victims of abuse. Albinism remains "taboo". The families concerned hide the albinos in their homes, whose access to education and health is very difficult for them. In addition, there are very few health professionals specialized in this field in Senegal. Currently, no census of albinos has been carried out in Senegal, this lack of information hinders the implementation of projects and prevents a fair understanding of the phenomenon.

Albinos in Senegal are rejected by society which considers them a curse. They are discriminated against and attribute supernatural powers. For example, it is now customary to say that having sex with them is a cure for HIV AIDS. In Central African countries like Tanzania and Burundi, they are subjected to horrific massacres.
