Urgent Causes

In Senegal, according to the census carried out in 2004 by the Department of Statistics, there are 2040 albinos throughout the national territory. In Wolof, the word « pouné » is used to designate them.

Cause Lists

Albinos in Senegal are rejected by society which considers them a curse. They are discriminated against and attribute supernatural powers. For example, it is now customary to say that having sex with them is a cure for HIV AIDS. In Central African countries like Tanzania and Burundi, they are subjected to horrific massacres.

People with albinism usually leave school very early because teachers do not give them the necessary follow-up and the special attention they need. Thus, left to their own devices, they are forced to beg in the streets under the sun. It is an endless vicious cycle.

Albinos need medical attention. Their skin and eyes are extremely sensitive to sunlight. Without medical attention, they often end up blind and die of skin cancer. It is vital for these people that they are cared for and that they are made aware of how to protect themselves from the sun. ¤ We would like to set up medical care in dermatology and ophthalmology for albinos in need of care.
